The Road Traffic Act states that by UK law all drivers must be to
be insured against liability for injuries to others including their
passengers and any damage to other parties property resulting from
their use of a vehicle on the road.
It is an offence to drive a car or allow others to drive your car
without the correct car insurance.
There are three types of car insurance cover available to UK residents
- Third party, Third party fire and theft and comprehensive cover.
A recent surrey of car insurance policies in effect in the UK found
that two thirds of UK drivers had comprehensive insurance. Of the
remaining third in the survey a majority had third party fire and
theft cover with a relatively small proportion taking out the limited
cover of third party.
Third party covers provides :
Liability for injuries to other people, including passengers along
with liability for damage to other people's property. It also covers
liability of passengers for accidents caused by them and any liability
arising from the use of a caravan or trailer, while attached to the
insured vehicle.

in the event of fire, explosion or theft of your vehicle. There is
usually a policy excess for claims for which you are responsible for
or cannot recover costs from the responsible party.
Comprehensive cover provides :
Comprehensive cover provides the same level of cover that you will
receive for third party mentioned above. It also provides cover for
accidental damage to your own vehicle. There is usually a policy excess
for claims for which you are responsible for or cannot recover costs
from the responsible party. Comprehensive cover also normally provides
a certain amount of personal accident benefit. This can include a
specified amount to be are paid in the event of the death or specific
permanent disablement of the policyholder. In certain circumstances
it may also cover his or her spouse or family member.
Most comprehensive policies also include medical expenses necessarily
incurred, up to a stated limit and loss or damage to personal effects
in your vehicle up to a stated limit.
